Best time to visit Madrid

Madrid has a real climate, not a mild one — that shapes when you should go far more than events or crowds do.

The short answer

Late April through June, and mid-September through October, are Madrid's best months: warm days, cool evenings, and the city fully open. July and August bring genuine heat — regularly 35°C+ in August — and a large share of madrileños leave the city, which means some family-run restaurants close for weeks at a time.

Mar–MayMild, occasional rain, blossoms in Retiro Park. Good value before peak season.
JunHot but bearable, long daylight hours, terraces in full swing.
Jul–AugVery hot (often 35°C+), quieter locally, some closures — but cheaper flights and hotels.
Sep–OctArguably the best window: heat breaks, city fills back up, light stays warm into evening.
Nov–FebCold and can be genuinely frosty at night, but bright and dry more often than not; low season pricing.

If you're chasing football

The La Liga season runs roughly August to May, so if a Real Madrid match at the Bernabéu is part of the plan, that rules out a pure summer trip — see our Real Madrid guide for how match scheduling actually works.

Around Christmas and New Year

Madrid does the holidays properly — Gran Vía and the Plaza Mayor Christmas market are genuinely worth seeing, and the city has a festive, unhurried feel. It's cold, but rarely unbearable, and hotel prices dip between the big shopping weekends and New Year itself.

One date to plan around

San Isidro (15 May) is Madrid's patron saint festival — a genuinely local celebration with free concerts and traditional dress in the parks. Fun to catch, but expect the centre to be busier than usual.
